This class will cover one technique for creating Viking style brocade trim.

10-10:50 - Surviving Diabetes in the SCA

A guided discussion on coping strategies for keeping up an active participation in the SCA while maintaining proper control of one's diabetes.

10-10:50 - Working from Period Sources

The class gives suggestions and tips for decoding period recipes. These include determining what you are supposed to end up with, what you are supposed to start with, and proportioning the ingredient list. Also included are tips on selecting the source, which to use and which to avoid.

10-10:50 - Garb for Middle Eastern Dancers
INSTRUCTORs: al-Mu'Allim Haamid al-Tayyib, Sayyidas Halima, Fatima, and Yamina bint al-Rabii'
This class will outline basic styles of garb appropriate for Middle Eastern dancers in the SCA.

10-11:50 - Practical Glove Making

This class will focus on making leather gloves that fit your individual hands and that are optimized for function. A starter pattern will be provided.

11- 11:50 - Shimmy Tutorial
INSTRUCTOR: al-Mu'allim Haamid al-Tayyib
This class will be all about the shimmy. There will be a technical break-down of the Egyptian knee-driven shimmy, which we will then expand into looser, hip-driven shimmies. Also discussed will be shoulder shimmies, side-specific shimmies, ¾ shimmies, and the incorporation of the hip shimmy into moves such as figure-eights, Mayas, hip circles, and several different types of steps. Please wear a fringed hip wrap, scarf, or sash for the class; no coins.

11-11:50 - Midrealm Legal Archery Equipment
INSTRUCTOR: Forester Padraig MacRaighne (padraig@cablespeed.com)
A "hands-on" class discussing what may and may not be used in tournaments in the Middle Kingdom. There will be examples of good and bad equipment for participants to examine. MiT candidates can receive a signature in the "Inspections" area of their form for attending. We also will discuss the Rules of the Line as time permits. If you are shy, be warned: This class can get a little rowdy and it is not unknown for multiple Foresters (Members of the Greenwood Company) to turn up at a session. If someone else has the room immediately after us and people still want to talk, we will adjourn to the Lunch Tavern area or to someone's day camp to continue.

11-11:50 - Kumihimo for beginners

Students will first learn some historical background information about Japanese braiding. The technique will be taught on foam braiding disks that students may take with them at class end. Supplies for class, $3.00

This class will focus on the Italian improvisational practice known as 'diminution,' as examined through the writings of Sylvestro Ganassi and works of Giovanni Bassano. The emphasis of this class will be on the practical aspect of diminution as a technique for improvisation and ornamentation."

From Recommendation to Court Report A look at award recommendations and what happens afterwards: how the court list and scroll preparation are administered, a backstage view of court, and the official court report. Presented from the viewpoint of your regional scribal officer (Hannah) and an experienced court herald (Kriemhilt). Our goal for this class is to make the process less mysterious to the populace, and to perhaps inspire new talent to join us behind the scenes.

1-1:50 - Folklore: An Introduction (How to use folklore to add spice to your persona)

Everyone has stories they've been told, handed down from generation to generation. Parables their mother told them as a child to keep them from going out after dark, or wearing the wrong color to a festival. This class is designed to teach you how to recognize your own personal folklore, and to help you find folklore for your persona that can add to the development and exploration of history. Those interested in the class are encouraged to contact the instructor prior to the event with your persona's background (era, location, ethnicity, etc.) so that she can bring the appropriate books and information customized to your persona.

2-2:50 - Bookbinding

FEE: $5 for supplies Basic binding of books, a bit of history, hands-on, and practical application. Participants will learn different types of stitches and page and cover attachment and will leave with a small bound book.

2-2:50 - Choosing and Developing a Japanese Persona

This class is designed to assist SCA members who are choosing a new persona or establishing their first persona in the setting of Japan. The class covers topics such as choosing the importance of a timeframe, focusing on what career or status you wish to portray, clothing you may wear at different times, pictures of garb, etc. Additionally, the course material has patterns for basic garb, and a small vocabulary selection to add to your persona.

2-2:50 - Medieval Cooking: Theory and Practice

This class is intended as an introduction into the art of medieval period cooking. What makes a dish "period?" What is it that is unique to medieval fare? How did the worldview of Europe in the Middle Ages find expression through food? And how can a Betty Crocker dependent fool like me recreate the work of medieval chefs in my modern kitchen? These and other fascinating aspects of ancient culinary arts will be addressed. Not to be confined to discussion, this is also a "hands-on" class. Students will have the chance to cook a period dish and taste the results! This is a class for beginners.

This class will seek to answer all the questions a new scribe could have including a brief history of manuscript art, assembling your materials and building your first scribe kit, scribal do's and don'ts, and creating your first scroll. For the very beginner level with an explanation of strictly modern materials.

3-3:50 - Heian Japan, a Cultural Overview

One of the most dynamic and diversifying time in early Japanese history, the Heian period was one of rediscovery and reinvention. It was a time in Japanese history where they strove for individuality, getting away from many of the Chinese customs, creating their own art and fashion. High political intrigue, courtly games and an extremely poetic fascination with color are symbols of the period. This class will give you a small overview of the timeline, a glimpse into court life of Heian Japan, and a brief description of the noble fashions and behaviors.

3-3:50 - The Court Cuisine of Ottoman Turkey 12-16th Centuries, Research and Execution

Join the instructor for an overview of the culture of cuisine served at the famed Topkapi Palace during the height of the Ottoman Empire, focusing on the time of Suleyman the Magnificent. The material presented is based on the research behind the newly released E-Cookbook "Celebration at the Sarayi; Reliving a Feast in the Palace of Suleyman the Magnificent" and the execution of a 16th Century Ottoman feast held for the Spring Coronation of Felix and Madeleina the II, in Canton of Three Hills. A research and multi-image CD will be available for $5. There will possibly be samples of food.

3-3:50 - Beer Making 101

Beer is one of the simplest and fastest brews to make. You can go from kettle to class in about four weeks or less. This class will cover the short list of essential equipment and cover the extract with adjunct grain method of brewing. Some background to historical brews will also be given.
